"helping jersey children & young people through difficult times in their lives." home history support contact about us as one of jersey's oldest charities, brig-y-don has made many changes over the past few years to meet the needs of today's vulnerable children and young people. aims to help by improving the lives of children in residential care in jersey, then by supporting them when they move on to live independently. today principally uses its funds to buy goods, services and life-enhancing experiences that will improve the lives of children & young people in residential care in jersey. it continues to help when, as young adults, they leave care to live independently in the wider community. by sponsoring further education & items to promote independence, we encourage self-sufficiency rather than reliance on the state. as a secondary purpose the charity will also consider any request to help a child in need in jersey. brig-y-don first opened in 1925 as a children's convalescent and holiday home to care for children recovering from tuberculosis. over the subsequent years brig-y-don evolved into a home which provided care to children who, for a variety of reasons, were unable to be with their own families. due to lack of funds, the charity ceased to run the residential home in 2009. the following year the states of jersey agreed to lease the property from the charity and in 2011 the states extensively refurbished the property to bring it in line with current guidelines and standards. health & social services now manage the residential unit, known as brig-y-don house, whilst the charity continues to help children and young people during difficult times; the ethos of care, the foundation upon which the charity was built, remains strong. testimonials error loading object(s) it dawned on me that for this family christmas presents were only going to be a few things from the 'pound shop' as they had no money left and extended family had chipped in to buy a cooker, which was more important than children's gifts. due to the sheer scale and generosity of and your sponsors, i was able to take a selection of gifts for each child and take them to the parents in one of the lovely christmas bags you brought the gifts in. mum was overwhelmed and dad's eyes looked a bit moist as they gratefully took the bag off me. it certainly left me with a warm feeling and a nice way to finish before i went on leave to visit my loved ones for christmas. received from a social worker the support and much needed items has given me, made becoming an independent adult a much smoother and more comfortable process. it is encouraging to know that such support is there for me and other young adults. received from a care leaver thanks to for helping me to pay for my doctors bill so i could go to the doctor when i was really ill and get a referral to the hospital. received from a care leaver i would just like to thank you for the support your charity has given me towards my graduation expenses. with your help, i am now able to afford my robe, hat, accommodation and transport. thank you , you really are fairy godmothers at times like this and i can’t thank you enough. received from a care leaver our grateful thanks to the and their administrator mrs allison le blancq for the invaluable support and funding received. without the kindness of the brig-y-don charity, many of the young people that we work with would not have had the opportunities in life to follow their desired paths. received from the leaving care team (lct) thank you for paying for my driving lessons, in the future it will help me get a full time job and give me greater independence. received from a care leaver thank you very much for the money towards my new computer, as a media student, a computer is quite possibly the most important piece of equipment i can own, it would have been impossible to purchase one without your help and it should give me the means to break into the business. for that i can't thank you enough!
